Kitchen Remodeling for Seattle Homes

A Trusted Partner for Seattle Kitchen Remodels

Seattle kitchens are shaped by when the house was built. In Ballard, Wallingford, Ravenna and Queen Anne, a lot of homes date to the early 1900s through the 1930s, which means Craftsman and Tudor floor plans with the kitchen boxed off at the back of the house, one small window over the sink, and a pantry doing the work a modern kitchen island would do today. Those rooms were never designed for a family cooking, working and eating in the same space, so most of the kitchen remodeling we do here is as much about the walls as the finishes.

Our office is in West Seattle on California Ave SW, so we work across the city regularly, from Magnolia and Green Lake to Capitol Hill, Madrona, Wedgwood and Laurelhurst. The practical issues repeat: undersized electrical behind the plaster, cast iron drain lines, uneven subfloors, load-bearing walls between the kitchen and dining room, and hillside lots where a territorial or Sound view is worth designing the sightlines around. We plan for those before demolition rather than finding them mid-project, and we handle City of Seattle permitting through SDCI as part of the job.

Why Remodel

The Benefits of Remodeling Your Kitchen

The kitchen is where meals get made, homework happens and people gather. In an older Seattle home, a good remodel changes how the whole main floor works.

A Layout That Works

Opening a closed kitchen into the dining or living room brings sightlines and daylight from more than one direction, which matters through a Puget Sound winter.

Storage You Stop Fighting

Full-height cabinets, deep drawers and pull-out pantry units usually add more usable capacity than the square footage suggests.

Systems Brought Up To Date

A remodel is the right moment to correct the electrical, plumbing and ventilation hiding behind the cabinets of a 1920s house.

Kitchen Remodeling Options We Handle

Most Seattle kitchen remodels are a combination of the pieces below. Part of our job in design is telling you which ones earn their cost in your house.

Remodeling Your Entire Kitchen

Remodeling Your Entire Kitchen

A full kitchen remodel is our most common project. We explore every workable layout, then guide you through selecting everything from cabinets to lighting, building one coherent room instead of a set of separate upgrades.

Changing Your Kitchen Layout

Changing Your Kitchen Layout

Older Seattle kitchens were built to be closed. We reconfigure the layout by moving the entry point, relocating the sink or range, and rearranging the work zones so two people can be in the room without getting in each other's way.

Creating an Open Floor Plan

Creating an Open Floor Plan

The most requested change in a Craftsman or Tudor is removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room. Where that wall is load bearing, we design a beam and post detail that carries the load properly and keeps the ceiling line clean.

Adding or Expanding an Island

Adding or Expanding an Island

An island adds prep surface, seating and storage in one move, but only if the room can give up the clearance. In narrower Ballard and Fremont kitchens, a peninsula often does the same job in less space.

Custom & Semi-Custom Cabinets

Custom & Semi-Custom Cabinets

Older homes rarely have square walls or standard ceiling heights, which is where semi-custom and custom cabinetry earns its money. We plan full-height uppers, drawer banks instead of base shelves, and dedicated spots for what usually lives on the counter.

Modern Countertops

Modern Countertops

Quartz is our most-installed surface for its durability and low maintenance, with natural stone where you want the movement and character. We template after the cabinets are set, then carry the design through the backsplash tile.

Built-In Kitchen Lighting

Built-In Kitchen Lighting

Seattle kitchens need layered light more than most. We plan recessed ceiling cans, under-cabinet task lighting over the work surfaces and pendants over an island, then add the circuits and switching older wiring almost never has.

Flooring & Natural Light

Flooring & Natural Light

Many Seattle homes have original fir or oak running through the main floor. Where it is sound we refinish and patch into the kitchen. Where it is not, we level the subfloor and look at engineered hardwood or tile, and add or reposition windows where the structure allows.

Design Inspiration

Kitchen Styles Popular in Seattle Homes

A kitchen should look like it belongs in the house it sits in. These four directions come up most often across the city.

Modern Craftsman

Shaker doors, simple trim and warm wood tones that respect a Ballard or Wallingford Craftsman while opening up the plan.

Warm Pacific Northwest Minimal

Flat-panel cabinets, quiet hardware and natural wood accents, designed to hold up in low winter light.

Transitional Two-Tone

Painted perimeter cabinets with a contrasting island or wood range wall. The most forgiving direction if you may sell in a few years.

Classic White With Character

White cabinetry with the detail carried in tile, lighting and hardware. Suits Queen Anne, Madrona and Laurelhurst homes with original character.

The Design-Build Advantage

Why Work With a Design-Build Firm

With Space | Craft, design and construction live under one roof. There is no handoff between a designer and a separate contractor, no finger-pointing when something needs solving, and one accountable team from your first sketch to the final walkthrough.

It matters on older Seattle houses specifically. When the plaster comes off and we find undersized wiring or a drain that has to move, the design and construction decision happens in one room instead of across three companies. That is usually the difference between losing a day and losing three weeks.

Timeline
Several Weeks

A typical project of this type starts with the kitchen closed off behind a wall from the dining room, limited counter space and one small window. We remove the wall with proper structural support, run a new cabinet layout along two walls with an island in the middle, add quartz countertops and full-height storage, and rework the electrical and ventilation to current standards.

Kitchen Remodel Cost in Seattle

Kitchen remodel cost in Seattle is driven by whether the layout changes, the level of cabinetry, and the condition of what sits behind the plaster. As a general guide:

Project Level Typical Scope General Range
Refresh Same footprint, new countertops, backsplash, hardware, paint, lighting, possible cabinet refacing Lower investment
Full Remodel New cabinetry, countertops, flooring, lighting and appliances in the existing footprint Mid-range investment
Full Remodel + Layout Change Wall removal, structural support, relocated plumbing and electrical, custom features Premium investment
Why It's Worth It

Why a Kitchen Remodel Is a Smart Investment

A kitchen remodel is a long-term investment in how the house works, not just how it looks. In an older Seattle home, some of the best value is in the parts nobody sees.

  • The room buyers judge, and the first impression of the whole house in a competitive Seattle market.

  • It changes the floor plan, making the entire main floor live larger without adding square footage.

  • It fixes what is hidden, with electrical, plumbing and ventilation updates that protect the house long after finishes date.

  • It is daily use, the one remodel you use several times a day, every day.
